Connecticut Warbler at McCabe Nature Preserve

Early this afternoon I found a Connecticut Warbler at McCabe Nature Preserve (eBird checklist). I think this is the first record for the preserve, which is located just outside of Milton, Delaware. I had high hopes of landing a Nashville Warbler or Blue-headed Vireo for my Delaware year list, but had no expectation of finding a Connecticut Warbler (CONW). The bird wasn’t acting like a textbook CONW (you know, skulky and hard to see), but was straight up chillin’ on bare branches in a young hardwood stand. Who goes out to find a Nashville Warbler and finds a Connecticut Warbler? Anyway, I don’t have much time to write so here are the photos.

The next three photos are a bit overexposed, but still get the job done.

Bird Banding at the Penn State Arboretum!

Yesterday morning I went to help band birds at the Penn State Arboretum. I am sure glad I went because we caught some dandies! Eight other Penn State students and two non-students were also there helping and to learn about songbird banding. We caught 12 species and totaled 37 individuals. Highlights for the morning were an After Hatch Year Female CONNECTICUT WARBLER, an After Hatch Year YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, and an ACADIAN FLYCATCHER! I have not seen any of these birds in Pennsylvania yet and have not seen a Connecticut Warbler or an Acadian Flycatcher in my life! Today was a fantastic day for banding and birding at the arboretum. A complete checklist of all birds observed banded and not banded can be seen here. A complete list of banded birds and recaptures as well as pictures are listed and shown below.
